Can Dogs Eat Soy Sauce?

ModerateAvoid — High Salt

Soy sauce is very high in sodium, and even a small amount relative to a dog's size can contribute meaningfully to excess salt intake.

Why

The concern with soy sauce isn't a unique toxin but pure salt concentration — it's one of the saltier condiments commonly found in a kitchen, and a dog's much smaller body size means the same splash that seasons a human meal is proportionally a much bigger dose.

How to serve it safely

  • Avoid offering soy sauce or dishes heavily seasoned with it
  • If a dog eats a significant amount of soy-sauce-heavy food, watch for excessive thirst and contact a vet if severe
  • Low-sodium varieties exist but still shouldn't be offered intentionally
