Can Dogs Eat Soetkoekies / Souskluitjies?

ModerateDough, Sugar & Cinnamon

Souskluitjies (steamed dumplings served in a sweet cinnamon syrup) aren't toxic, but the combination of dense dough and sugar syrup makes this an occasional treat rather than something to share regularly.

Why

The dough here is fully cooked (steamed) rather than raw, so it doesn't carry the yeast dough concern covered on our bread page — the real consideration is simply sugar and calorie density from the syrup, similar to koeksisters.

How to serve it safely

  • A small piece occasionally is a reasonable amount for most dogs
  • Drain excess syrup before offering any to reduce the sugar load
  • Not a food to share regularly given the sugar content
