Can Dogs Eat Parsley?

ModerateCurly Parsley Only, Small Amounts

Small amounts of curly (not spring/flat-leaf) parsley are generally fine and even used as a breath freshener for dogs, but larger amounts of spring parsley specifically can be a concern for dogs with kidney issues.

Why

There are two common types of parsley, and they're not treated identically. Curly parsley in small amounts is well tolerated. Spring (flat-leaf) parsley contains furanocoumarins and is more of a concern in large quantities, particularly for dogs with existing kidney disease, where it's generally recommended to avoid regularly.

How to serve it safely

  • Curly parsley in small amounts is the safer choice
  • Avoid regular, large amounts of any parsley type for dogs with kidney disease
  • A small sprinkle as a treat topper is a reasonable amount
