Can Dogs Eat Koeksisters?

ModerateNot Recommended as a Treat

Koeksisters aren't specifically toxic, but as a syrup-soaked fried dough, they're high in sugar and fat with no real nutritional benefit, and best kept away from dogs.

Why

There's no unique toxin here, but the combination of deep-fried dough and dense sugar syrup is about as far from a healthy treat as you can get — high fat and high sugar together are a poor combination for a dog's digestive system and long-term weight management.

How to serve it safely

  • Best avoided as a treat entirely
  • If a dog steals a piece, watch for GI upset given the fat and sugar load
  • Not a food worth intentionally sharing, regardless of its harmlessness in a single small bite
