Can Dogs Eat Flax Seeds?

SafeGround, Small Amounts

Yes. Ground flaxseed in small amounts is safe for dogs and a source of omega-3 fatty acids, and is included in some commercial dog foods.

Why

Flaxseed carries no toxicity concern in the small amounts typically used. Whole (unground) flaxseed passes through largely undigested and offers little nutritional benefit compared to the ground form.

Serving tips

  • Ground flaxseed digests better than whole seeds
  • A small sprinkle on food is a reasonable serving
  • Store ground flaxseed in the fridge, as it can go rancid quickly
