Can Dogs Eat Figs?

ModerateOccasional, Small Amounts

A small amount of ripe fig flesh is generally tolerated, but figs can cause stomach upset in larger amounts and fig plant sap is an irritant.

Why

The fruit itself isn't associated with serious toxicity, but the natural sap of fig plants (leaves, stems) contains compounds that can irritate skin and the digestive tract — this matters more if you have a fig tree than if you're sharing dried or fresh fruit from the shop.

How to serve it safely

  • Offer only a small piece of ripe, fresh fig
  • Keep dogs away from fig tree leaves and sap if you have one
  • Avoid dried figs in large amounts — concentrated sugar and fibre can cause loose stools
