Can Dogs Eat Dhal?

ModerateCheck for Onion & Garlic

Plain, well-cooked lentils aren't a concern for dogs, but dhal recipes almost always start with an onion and garlic-based tempering, which is the real risk in this dish.

Why

Lentils themselves are a fine protein and fibre source for dogs when fully cooked. The tempering (tadka) — onion, garlic, and whole spices fried in ghee or oil at the start of most dhal recipes — is where the genuine risk sits, following the same mechanism as our onions & garlic page.

How to serve it safely

  • Check whether the specific batch was made with onion and garlic before sharing
  • Plain, home-cooked lentils without the tempering are a reasonable low-risk option
  • Avoid restaurant or takeaway dhal by default, since the tempering is standard practice
