Can Dogs Eat Bobotie?

ToxicAvoid — Contains Raisins & Spices

Bobotie should not be shared with dogs — traditional recipes typically include raisins (toxic), onion (toxic), and a curry spice blend that can cause significant GI irritation.

Why

This is one of the higher-risk South African dishes on this list specifically because of what's traditionally in it, not because of the base meat. Raisins are genuinely toxic in any amount (see our grapes/raisins page), onion is a cumulative toxin, and the spiced egg-custard topping and curry powder blend add further GI irritation risk on top of that.

Symptoms to watch for

What to do if your dog ate this

  • Don't share bobotie, even a small amount, given the raisin content specifically
  • If your dog eats a portion of bobotie, treat it primarily as a raisin exposure and contact your vet
  • This applies to most traditional recipes — always check if a specific batch omits raisins before assuming lower risk

🚨 If this happens

Contact your nearest 24-hour emergency vet clinic immediately, or your regular vet's after-hours line. Bring packaging if you have it.
