Can Dogs Eat Atchar?

ToxicChilli, Oil & Mustard Seed

No. Atchar (a spiced mango or vegetable pickle) typically combines chilli, mustard seed, and a heavy oil base — a combination worth avoiding rather than sharing.

Why

Mustard seed is a genuine GI irritant in quantity (see our mustard page), and it's a defining ingredient in most atchar recipes, not a trace amount. Combined with chilli's capsaicin irritation and a high oil content, this is a dish where several minor risk factors stack together rather than one dominant toxin.

What to do if your dog ate this

  • Don't share atchar, even a small taste
  • If a dog eats a meaningful amount, watch for vomiting or diarrhoea from the mustard seed and chilli combination
  • Keep serving dishes out of reach at gatherings where atchar is commonly served alongside meat
