Can Dogs Eat Sports Drinks?

ModerateNot Necessary

A small amount of a plain sports drink isn't typically dangerous, but the added sugar and electrolyte formulation are designed for human needs, not canine ones, and offer no real benefit.

Why

Sports drinks aren't a toxicity concern in a small amount, but their sugar and electrolyte balance is calibrated for human exercise physiology, and there's no reason to substitute one for water in a dog's routine hydration or recovery.

How to serve it safely

  • Plain water is always the better choice for hydrating a dog
  • Not worth offering intentionally, even after exercise
  • If a dog laps up a small spill, this isn't typically a concern
