Can Dogs Eat Soda / Cooldrink?

ModerateNot Recommended

Regular soda isn't a good idea for dogs due to sugar content and lack of nutritional value, and diet or 'sugar-free' versions increasingly use xylitol, which is genuinely dangerous.

Why

Regular soda's main issue is empty sugar calories rather than acute toxicity, but this category has a fast-growing hidden risk: many diet and sugar-free soft drinks now use xylitol as a sweetener, which is severely toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

How to serve it safely

  • Avoid offering soda of any kind as a treat
  • Always check for xylitol on diet or 'zero sugar' products specifically — this is an increasingly common ingredient
  • Caffeinated soft drinks carry the same caffeine concerns as coffee or tea
