Can Dogs Eat Mageu?

ModerateSmall Amounts, Plain

A small amount of plain, unsweetened mageu is generally low risk, but its fermented nature means trace alcohol content and added sugar in commercial versions are both worth considering.

Why

Mageu is a fermented maize drink, and fermentation can produce trace amounts of alcohol — generally low enough not to be a major concern in the small amounts a dog might taste, but worth being aware of, particularly with homemade or longer-fermented batches. Commercial, sweetened versions add sugar content on top of that.

How to serve it safely

  • Choose plain, unsweetened versions if sharing any at all
  • Avoid longer-fermented homemade batches, which may have higher trace alcohol content
  • Not a necessary treat — there's no real nutritional benefit that outweighs these minor considerations
