Can Dogs Eat Eggnog?

ModerateCheck for Alcohol & Nutmeg

Non-alcoholic eggnog in a small amount is generally low risk beyond the usual dairy and sugar considerations, but many recipes include alcohol and a notable amount of nutmeg, both of which are genuine concerns.

Why

Traditional eggnog recipes often include spirits and a fairly generous nutmeg garnish — both covered elsewhere on this site as real toxicity concerns in sufficient quantity. Non-alcoholic, lightly spiced versions are a much lower-risk version of the same drink.

How to serve it safely

  • Confirm whether a specific batch of eggnog contains alcohol before offering any
  • Keep nutmeg garnish light or avoid it entirely
  • Small amounts only, given the dairy and sugar content regardless
